A Work in Progress...Part 4...Button, Pressed and Ready To Send

This is the final part of the series.."A Work In Progress", of which we have followed through the making of two bespoke sports jackets/coats.

The first jacket is the exclusive LLTW20 from The London Lounge Cloth Club. Which is a Blue Shetland Tweed with a brown window pane.

The second jacket is the JJ Minnis 7704.

As you can see from the pictures, the jackets are back from the hand finisher (see part 3) and are now ready for the final press and buttoning which was done by Andrea, and then prepared to be shipped off Stateside.

Also, just a note to mention that the jackets are modelled by Dad and myself for the purpose of this article.

If The Shoe Fits...

I was just having a bit of fun one afternoon with Matthew & Andrea, explaining how I could draft a jacket pattern for Matthew just by using his shoe as the only guide. Needless to say they asked me to prove it.......

Unfortunately we have had to cut the video into two parts around 8 minutes in length as this was just done off the cuff on Matthew's iPhone.

A Work in Progress...Part 3..Ready For Finishing

Just a further update on this JJ Minnis 7704 sports jacket, which is now ready for finishing.

What happens to your jacket when it goes to the finisher??

The edges of the jacket will all be stitched by hand and in this case with it being a tweed, we will use what is called a "swelled edge". Whereby it will be sewn approx 3/8" (1cm) in from the edge, unlike most suit jackets and blazers, which would be sewn virtually on the edge. In both cases the purpose of this stitch is to stop the edges rolling. The "swelled edge" is mainly a distinguishing feature of tweed jackets, due to the thickness of the cloth but could be utilised as a style feature if required.

Along with the edge stitching, the buttonholes, felling of the lining and the undercollar will all be done by hand to prepare the jacket for pressing and buttoning, before delivery to the customer.

Whilst making the jacket, the tailor should use a process called under pressing, which basically means pressing the job ( jacket) as you go, this will help and make the final press a lot easier.

Please note that Dad (Edwin DeBoise) is modelling the jacket for the purpose of the article.

Things You Do For Airmiles...NYC December Trip!

It is looking more likely now that my next trip to the States will be in March of 2012 rather than the usual January trip.

However I will be making a short trip "across the pond" for a long weekend in New York City in December. Partly due to being a few miles short of keeping my Platinum Status and also with the countless trips over the years to the States, I have never had the pleasure of seeing New York in the Holiday season.

With this, I thought I would take the opportunity to mix a bit of business with pleasure and will be free to meet with customers over the weekend.

Anybody that has had patterns and would like a fitting, please could you let me know as soon as possible, so that I can arrange to have a fitting brought out.

A Work in Progress...Part 2

Now Dad's back from the States, it's time for part 2 of the series...A Work in Progress.

The first fitting is of the London Lounge LLTW20. This is for a gentleman that Dad saw in Washington DC.

It is a first fitting (basted) and therefore don't be alarmed at how square the fronts are at the bottom of the jacket, these will be rounded off when the coat is finished. Also the fronts are looking slightly more open then they will be, as the edge of the cloth is turned in for the basted fitting.

The only alteration that we need to do is to slightly shorten the sleeves. The left sleeve just 3/8" and the right sleeve will be shortened a 1/4".

One thing to remember regarding sleeve lengths on jackets is that it is a very personal thing and it is purely a matter of taste to each individual. However, personally I think you need at least 3/8" if not 1/2" of shirt cuff to show, to finish the look off.

The second fitting is for Voxsartoria (those of you will know him from the different fashion forums & also from his new website.)

This cloth is the 13oz brown triple check, JJ Minnis 7704

As with most of our fittings we don't have many problems at all, apart from just lengthening the right sleeve 1/4" and a tad on the left.

From here Dad gives me the fittings to "rip down". This basically means, having to take out the sleeve, shoulders and part of the collar. As you can see from the photo's.

Pressing the job flat to make it easier for Dad to "mark up".

Does it have an out-breast pocket or not??

Trimming the inlay on the shoulders, which is left on for the fitting, in case of the need for extra "back balance".

Ready for the tailor to complete and to prepare it for the "Finisher" Who will put in the hand button holes as well as the edge stitching, along with other various finishing stitches, needed to complete the jacket.

In part 3 we will showcase the two coats that are ready for the finisher, then when the finishing has been done & the final button and press.

A Work in Progress...Part 1

Over the next few weeks, we are going to follow through the production from start to finish of a couple of interesting cloths, of which Steed are making for two separate customers in The United States.

Both of these jackets are to be fitted on the current USA October trip and upon Edwin's return from the trip we will post part 2 of the "A work in progress" and show you the photo's from the fittings.

The first cloth is an exclusive London Lounge cloth called LLTW20 which is a beautiful blue Shetland tweed with a brown window pane, designed by Michael Alden, the creator of The London Lounge.

Steed Expands to China

Its an honour for Steed to announce that we have been invited out to Beijing, China to take part in the China International First (Beijing) Private Custom Made Products Exhibition, in September of this year. Where we will be showcasing our Savile Row Bespoke Tailoring Services to the East-Asian market.

This exhibition has invited luxury custom-made brands from countries all over the world, such as Great Britain, France, Italy, Germany, Switzerland, The United States, Japan and China.

These brands include prestigious names such as Alfred Dunhill, Ferrari, Lamborghini, Aston Martin, Hermes, George Cleverley, Patek Philippe and of course Steed.

This will be Steeds first foray into China as we look to start a new chapter by introducing the unique world and experience of Savile Row to the Chinese people.

Steed have been given this great opportunity as a result of an article that Matthew wrote last October and was published in the November edition of TIDE Magazine, which is the largest fashion magazine in China. We were given a 10 page spread of which four were in English and six in Chinese.

When we were first approached to do the article, we were asked to write it as more of a journal in which it could be used to tell the story of Savile Row and the history of Steed and my own personal life growing up on Savile Row and following the family traditions in Bespoke Tailoring.

The main purpose of the article was to educate the reader about the history and traditions of Savile Row Bespoke Tailoring and the differences of it compared to the modern day fashion trends of designer brands and their off the rack services.

Accompanying myself and Matthew on the trip is our friend and new China Marketing Director Bin Gao who has been instrumental in the setting up of this exiting trip to China.

We would also like to thank Xuewen Cao the CEO of TIDE Magazine and General Manager of the sponsor of the event Zhong Huang Culture, for inviting us to take part in such a prestigious event.

The Friendly Invasion Begins!

A reminder that Matthew and I will be flying out this Sunday for our Autumn trip that we have brought forward from October for this year.

It signals the Autumn invasion of The States not only from us, the rest of Savile Row and the UK but from all over the globe, with tailors hailing from as far as Italy and Hong Kong, amongst others.

However not to worry this is just a friendly invasion that we are about to embark on, unlike the only previous unfriendly invasion of England by the American Navy back in April, 1778, led by John Paul Jones.

John Paul Jones was a Scot who had learnt his seafaring trade in Whitehaven, Cumbria and who would become the founding father of the American Navy and after sailing to America on the "Friendship of Whitehaven", Jones grew up as an adopted American.

The last invasion of the British Mainland occurred in Whitehaven, Cumbria in 1778 when John Paul Jones, invaded the port, late at night on April 22nd 1778.

In truth, despite being audacious, having the advantage of surprise and Jones’s inside knowledge, the attack had been a bungled failure. This seems to have been due largely to the American crew’s reluctance to "destroy poor peoples property" as Wallingford had put it. However, the shock waves, that it sent throughout the country were completely out of proportion with the mere few hundred pounds worth of damage actually caused and turned John Paul Jones into an infamous pirate. Importantly, it awakened everyone to the threat of invasion. The defences of not only Whitehaven but also the entire British coast were improved and more volunteers joined the militias. In short, John Paul Jones did Britain a favour because his actions probably prevented a full-scale French invasion.

Other famous connections between Whitehaven and USA:

The Betsy', built in Whitehaven, was the last ship to be scuttled in the American War of Independence, in York River, Yorktown, Virginia.

'The Betsy' was the sister ship to the 1763 Whitehaven built slaver 'The King George', aboard which John Paul Jones was third mate and which the Beilby Goblet was made to commemorate - which can be seen in The Beacon

Robert Salmon, the 'Father of the American School of Marine Art' was born in Whitehaven in 1775

George Washington's grandmother, Mildred Gale, married a Whitehaven merchant and is buried in St. Nicholas churchyard.

Unfortunately due to the volcanic disruptions during our last trip in April, we were unable to make our usual June trip and decided that July and August wasn't an appropriate time for the trip.

Therefore we have decided to bring our usual October trip forward to September, with the intention of returning again before the years end.

We apologise for any inconvenience to our customers that are used to seeing us in June but it was an unforeseen delay and hopefully we will be back on track next year.

Who Say's Drape Can't Equal Shape?

Firstly, Congratulations to Mr & Mrs Nossiter from everyone at Steed...both of whom look wonderful on their wedding day.

David a contemporary London Architect, (www.davidnossiter.com) came to see Steed for his wedding suit.

At the time he was wearing a lovely 1948 Savile Row two piece tweed by Kilgour, with high armholes, a trim waisted silhouette, coupled with a generous cut trouser.

Upon discussing various aspects he required, David decided he was not as keen on the strongly structured shoulder and chest like on his Kilgour but decided he preferred a softer shouldered draped coat, which he felt Steed could provide him with. We decided on a Holland & Sherry (757 801) grey woollen flannel, which I think you will agree turned out superbly.

"Edwin was the ideal choice for me as he is able to produce a clean but soft silhouette."

There seems to be a misconception amongst a lot of people that the soft shouldered draped style of tailoring often produces a sloppy, baggy jacket with very little shape but as you can see of the two examples of the Steed silhouette, we are able to provide as much shape and "snap" as required.

A key feature of our cut is the high armhole which provides us with a longer line, with the added benefit of freedom of movement and comfort whilst not compromising the overall fit of the jacket.

This is illustrated in the picture of David leaning from the Bus. (Notice how the jacket stays gripped to his neck)

England 2010 World Cup Suits

The 2010 FIFA World Cup is due to kick-off in South Africa on Friday, 11th June, with England's opening game being on Saturday, 12th June against the USA in Rustenburg.

The team flew out to South Africa last week after posing for a photo shoot in their new Marks & Spencer suits.

The England team have shown off their official World Cup suits - and there is more than just a hint of 1966 in the design. Forty-four years ago, Sir Alf Ramsey's World Cup winners sported an ensemble with thin lapels and narrow trousers - a look England manager Fabio Capello was keen to see repeated.

With this in mind Marks & Spencer has created the official FA suit to specifications set by the England Manger and created though a collaboration between tailor Timothy Everest MBE and M&S.

The two-button single breasted jacket is sculpted to a modern British block with sleeve head roll shoulders for a classic fitting, slim silhouette. Additional styling details include narrower lapels, slanted pockets, four button cuffs and a decadent red puppy tooth check lining. Trousers are flat fronted and half lined providing an elegant modern shape. The waistcoat gives added style kudos and maintains the refined look.

I have to say overall the suits look very good and will hopefully inspire the team on the pitch to the former glory days of 1966, being the only time that we have won the competition.
Some of you across the pond may remember Marks & Spencer for their disastrous takeover of the American men's clothier chain, Brooks Brothers in April of 1988. Thankfully Brooks Brothers has since re-established itself, as has M&S.

The championship has been awarded every four years since the first tournament in 1930, except in 1942 and 1946 when it was not contested because of World War II.
The current format of the tournament involves 32 teams competing for the title at venues within the host nation(s) over a period of about a month – this phase is often called the World Cup Finals. A qualification phase, which currently takes place over the preceding three years, is used to determine which teams qualify for the tournament together with the host nation(s).

Please Don’t Fly The Union Flag The Wrong Way Up...

I know, it sounds trivial and there’s not much that irritates me but it’s just one of those things that I notice.

Now I can forgive The Waldorf in New York for flying it upside down, as it was when I was there in April but our flag bearer at the Winter Olympics was proudly waving it around when it was attached the wrong way up, for a news bulletin. (Luckily that was the day before the ceremony and the BBC was inundated with calls and emails and it was swiftly corrected).

So, I couldn’t let it go and had to pop into the Waldorf and explain their mistake, (pleasantly I might add). Now we all get that I’m embarrassed by my parents feeling, as Matthew did, so he stay outside but and as I pointed out to him. If the Ritz in London were flying the American flag upside down, I’m sure it would be, politely pointed out to them. Its just that it’s not so apparent with the Union flag. Oh and by the way it’s only called a Union Jack when it’s on the back of a boat.

Anyway, whilst walking by the following day, Matthew had noticed that The Waldorf had taken the flag down (probably to be safe, as how did they know I wasn’t pulling their leg) and replaced it with the German flag, much to Matthew’s amusement.

Do you think they were trying to tell me something?

Home Sweet Home

After an extra 5 days on the road due to the travel disruptions, Dad & I are finally back home in Cumbria. The trip turned out to be our busiest yet as we brought out the most fittings ever for a trip to the States.

It was also my first trip with the company and one that was a fantastic and greatly enjoyable experience. It was a pleasure to meet all of our American customers, old and new alike and I thank them for their patience and friendliness as Dad went through the various processes with me, whether it was the fittings or going through cloth selection and being able to give my own input and opinions. It was greatly appreciated.

Also I would like to say a special thank you to Chris Despos with whom we met at his beautiful shop in Chicago. It was great to finally meet him for the first time, though it was a shame it just had to be a quick flying visit as we both had full days. I'd like to thank him for his hospitality and offer of using his premises and facilities should we ever need them to show a certain cloth book which we might not have with us or to press up a job that we have. A great example of the community spirit that exists amongst tailors.

Also, just a little mention to the Kimberly in New York, where Dad has stayed for the past 14 years & where I've stayed before, when visiting New York for a Holiday. They've been re-furbishing the hotel over the last couple of years and dad said they finally got round to his suite, probably because they heard I was coming.

They've done a great job and along with the new rooftop penthouse, which has been turned into a beautiful rooftop lounge and bar, simply called Upstairs. As you can see it boasts an amazing 360 degree panoramic view of the famous Manhattan skyline, in particular a great shot of the nearby Chrysler Building.

Upstairs is available for party bookings through long-term friend of Dads, Valerie Blasi, who can be contacted on 212-702-1640.

We're Still Here!!

Just to let everybody know that we are still in Boston, USA due to the travel disruptions caused by the Icelandic Volcano eruption.

We were meant to be flying back to the UK last night, Tuesday 21st, April but are now due to fly back to the UK on Sunday, 25th April, which means

we won't be back in the office till Tuesday, 27th.

Despite the confusion over our travel arrangements and extra few days we are having to spend here, we are hoping to take the opportunity to take in some of Boston's sights and sounds, especially as this is Matthew's first visit to Boston. Starting with last nights NBA Play-Off game between the Boston Celtics and Miami Heat at the TD Garden, Boston.

It was a fantastic night and a great win for the Boston Celtics which certainly pleased the home crowd and the electric atmosphere was a great experience and one in which I'm glad I let Matthew talk me into as he is a big basketball fan and has been to a couple of NBA games before in Phoenix, Arizona as he is a Phoenix Suns fan, after spending a couple of weeks in summer camp there when he was younger.

Also we must say a thank you to all our customers who we saw on this trip for fittings and also for new commisions, it was a great opportunity for Matthew to finally meet the customers in person and experience what it can be like to be on the road. All of which will help him in his development as he learns "the ropes" of the trade.

Finally due to the sucess of this trip and high number of fittings we had to bring out, it looks like we will have to delay our usual June trip to the States to around the second week of July. This in turn will give us time to finish the fittings we have and prepare any future fittings.

Steed are pleased to announce their first trip to Paris, France. Edwin will be accompanied by both his son's Matthew & Christopher.

It is just a short weekend trip to see a couple of customers but there maybe an opportunity to see a couple more if anyone is interested.

Also purely by coincidence England happen to be playing France at the Stade de France in the final round of the RBS Six Nations Rugby. So hopefully the three of us will get a chance to take in the game at a local bar somewhere near the stadium.
