Sad Times For Savile Row

Sadly over here in the UK many of us mourn the passing of two British Icons, within a few weeks of each other. Both of whom were instrumental in the start of two Savile Row Firms.

Priscilla Maria Veronica White or better known to us all as “Cilla”.

Cilla was an English singer, actress and entertainer when she first came on to the scenes at the age of 20. Cilla White was the name starting to lift off; but Cilla's Producers had a better idea. They decided she needed a better stage name just before her career was about to really lift off and they ended up changing her surname from "White" to "Black, "Cilla White" was now "Cilla Black" and that was the spark of what would become a wonderful career.

Cilla, championed by her friends the Beatles, began her career as a singer in 1963, and her singles "Anyone Who Had a Heart" and "You're My World" both reached number one in the UK in 1964.

Apart from her glittering career, she was instrumental in the opening of “Nutters” on Savile Row on the 14th February 1969  and along with her beloved “Bobby” (who shortly after became her husband) and Peter Brown an American-based English businessman who helped found and serve as a board member of Apple Corps, assuming Epstein's duties after the manager's death.
Sadly, Tommy Nutter is no longer with us but Edward Sexton who started with Tommy, is still going strong with a thriving business.

They all put up around £5000 to help start the venture, which shook up the “Row” with their sharp shoulders, generous wide lapels and the fact they were the first tailors in the Row to have a dressed window with a jacket on a Mannequin.

A fitting tribute by close friend & TV personality Paul O'Grady.

Everyone here at Steed would also like to "tip their hat" to a true style icon and the inspiration behind the name of the company, Patrick Macnee who sadly passed away aged 93, on June 25, 2015, in California, United States

Patrick famously played the role of "John Steed" in the Avengers during the 1960's & again in the late 70's. It ran for eight seasons and continued in syndication for decades afterward.

This remains to be the most memorable role Macnee ever played and he will always be remembered as the Stylish and Cool Secret Agent “John Steed". We would like to think he'd appreciate our work after being voted "best dressed man" numerous times, himself.

A Tip Of Our Hats to "John Steed" :Remembering a Style Icon in Patrick Macnee

Steed would like to "tip their hat" to a true style icon and the inspiration behind the name of the company, Patrick Macnee who sadly passed away aged 93, on June 25, 2015

Patrick played the role of "John Steed" in the Avengers during the 1960's & again in the late 70's. I would like to think he'd appreciate our work after being voted "best dressed man" numerous times.

Born, Daniel Patrick Macnee on the 6th February 1922 in Paddington, London England. However professionally he was known as Patrick MacNee, dropping his first name.

After the war, Macnee took a few small films parts, including a role in the 1951 classic A Christmas Carol. But he left England for Canada and later the United States after receiving a call from David Greene, a director friend at CBC in Toronto.

Macnee returned to London in the 1960s when production began on The Avengers.

The clever spy drama, which began in 1961 in Britain, debuted in the United States in 1966. It ran for eight seasons and continued in syndication for decades afterward.

This remains to be the most memorable role Macnee ever played and he will always be remembered as the Stylish and Iconic, Secret Agent “John Steed”.

Steed in Sin City?

Steed in Sin City?

This Saturday, May 2nd marks the day of one of the biggest boxing fights of all time! Mayweather Vs Pacquiao.

Avid Boxing fans have been waiting years for this fight and it is finally here, live in Las Vegas, Nevada!

Everyone here at Steed will be forking our for this Pay-Per-View event which starts at 4am UK time. Possibly complimented by a few beers…

We will also be looking out for our friend, client and Former World Middleweight Champion, Darren Barker who will be wearing a Steed suit whilst working as a pundit covering the fight. Over a coffee last week he gave us his prediction of a draw. Stating that there is too much money to be made by all parties for there not to be a re-match plus the fact it’s just too close to call.

I’m actually one of the few who are in Floyd’s camp whilst also predicting a 11th round TKO win for Floyd.

Anyway, with all of the extensive coverage of this showcase, with Las Vegas once again being the backdrop, coupled with our few days of fun there for Dad’s (Edwin’s) birthday before we started our February trip, we’re considering the idea of introducing a stop in Las Vegas during our October trip.

However to take the plunge, just like when we added San Francisco to our full time schedule back in 2013, we would need to first gauge the interest in adding a 7th city to our itinerary. Then weigh up if it is viable and makes good business sense.

The idea is to go from San Francisco to Las Vegas, have a couple of days fun followed by a day of work and seeing any perspective clients before then heading on to Nashville.

Dad and I currently visit 6 cities in 16 days with only 1 day of respite so it would be nice to add a couple of days of fun in “Sin City” whilst being able to expand our U.S client base further.

If you are local to Las Vegas or a nearby city and are interested in what we have to offer, please get in touch with us via matthew@steed.co.uk

We would appreciate it if people could contact us in the near future so we can make a decision by August.

Enjoy the fight on Saturday!

Cheers,

Matthew & Charlie

Charlie Joins the Steed Team

Charlie Joins the Steed Team

Charlie Casey, Cousin to myself, Chris and also Nephew to Edwin has joined us here at Steed just a few weeks ago. Charlie has come on board with every interest of learning all about the "Savile Row Tailoring world."
Charlie has A-Levels in ICT and Business but chose not to attend University but to delve straight into the big wide world and start working. He's held other jobs which most recently included being a labourer for London construction firm so he certainly isn’t afraid of hard graft! However none of the jobs before really caught his eye or captured his imagination quite like what we do here at Steed.
Charlie is eager to learn the tailoring side of the firm and is currently learning under Matthew about the “Front of House” side of things in terms of learning all about the fabrics we deal with and most importantly our Steed House Style which sets up apart from the rest of "The Row". Whilst learning from Edwin and Matthew’s tailoring expertise and experience he is putting that into practise by learning to start to trim jobs up along with my brother Chris before then moving on to trouser pattern cutting with Matthew.
Along with that side of things he is also interested in helping Steed to grow both here in the UK and abroad with his valuable knowledge of social media such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, tumblr, Pinterest etc. As we look to grow our social media interaction to bring everyone closer to the action, so to speak.
All in all it's great to have another close family member come on board with us which we hope reflects the way in which we like to do business with our customers. In a friendly, inviting and informal way to put everyone at ease. As exasperating as it can occasionally be working alongside your Father, Brother and now Cousin I really wouldn't have it any other way.
Cheers,
Matthew
